Respect the higher ranks

I like how the military stops to salute higher ranks.  Whether you like the person or not, the respect does more than just recognize those who walk in the room.  It also reminds you of what you aspire to be.

For the same reason we should practice this outside the military. It is an art our generation is losing.

Stand when an older person enters the room and offer them your seat. Close your mouth when that same person begins to speak and listen intently.

How you honor and respect others might be a reflection of how you honor and respect yourself.

A new kind of thermostat, the Nest

This is innovation at it's best. Tony Fadell, one of the designers of the Apple iPod, has created a new design for thermostats.

This makes your thermostat look awesome and work awesome. Only the best I can tell it doesn't completely solve the home decor problem that is often unintentionally created by builders. No matter how cool your thermostat looks, if the builder placed it in a ridiculous place, like the middle of a large wall, it still looks weird.

I'd love to see a flat, thin, thermostat that could easily hide itself behind a hanging picture while the dials and display be plugged in elsewhere in the house and communicate to the thermostat. Just like the Nest, the remote dial could access the thermostat just like you can with your iPhone.

The Nest is the closest so far. If it is small enough to be hidden behind a canvas, we might be in business. Who is going to make it? Does it already exist?
