Mayberry and Mom

Last night we turned on the television and The Andy Griffith Show was on. We watched the episode and as it was going off and the whistling theme music was playing, it took my mind back to my childhood home.

The Andy Griffith Show was syndicated everyday at 5:30 and my mom had a small black and white TV which sat on top of the fridge. While she cooked dinner, she would listen and watch what was going on in Mayberry.  A lot of times she would have little appetizers on the counter to lure me into the kitchen while I watched, she cooked, and mostly we talked.

I didn't realize it at the time, but that was our quality time everyday - just the two of us. I don't know how intentional it was on her part to create that setting, but it's one I'll never forget and always cherish. It's been 7 years today since her death, but she lives in my memories more than anyone else.

I hope my kids will have the same type of memories 30 years from now.
