This past summer at the Willow Creek Association's Global Leadership Summit I heard Steven Furtick, Lead Pastor for Elevation Church in Charlotte NC, say the following.
"If your vision isn't intimidating, it may be insulting to God."
Is your vision big enough? Does your faith believe it can happen?

Go figure, GOD IS HUGE, so should our goals be...HUGE! We think so small sometimes, or is that "most of the times?"

Ben, I get the idea behind the quote, but I found it sadly ironic given the intimidation and insult referenced here: http://www.wsoctv.com/news/28173783/detail.html
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me sometimes our intimidating visions can get in the way of authentic faithfulness to God that often looks far more ordinary and messy than our "intimidating" visions.
The idea behind the quote is all I wanted to note. The story you shared is sad regardless of which side of the issue you choose to camp. The comments on the article raise some interesting questions.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I should add that Furtick spoke about Elisha in 2 Kings 3, where Jehosaphat's armies were without water. They asked Elisha for help, and he explained that God would cause it to rain. Furtick's point was that "only God can make it rain," and that your vision should line up with God's accordingly.
Thanks for sharing!
Ben, I tried to post via my wordpress profile, but it just showed my address instead of my info. I'm not sure why. Anyway, here are a few thoughts conjured up by your response.

It seems helpful to focus on aligning our vision with God's vision. The challenge seems to come from the inherent difficulties in discerning God's vision. For instance, one might discern God's vision for humanity as selfless, sacrificial lives lived for the sake of the world, while another might discern God's vision for humanity as enjoying a distraction free worship experience. By no means do I mean to belabor the earlier point raised by the article I linked. Rather, I just want to push back a little at the idea implicit in the speaker's point that we can line our vision up with God's. Thanks for the dialogue!
google knows it :-D
