Work and Incentive

This video is fascinating to me. There are several good nuggets to take from this. I'm still digesting it.

Beyond the message, I do enjoy the presentation style. It reminds me of Dan Roam's book The Back of the Napkin (Expanded Edition): Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures.

Men and shoes

It's not uncommon for women to have a closet full of shoes they rarely wear, but for a man, it's different. That doesn't mean a man doesn't appreciate footwear. He just chooses to have less variety. However, the shoes that make the cut for a man's closet might be more important than the ones in a woman's closet.

I recall learning once, that during job interviews the first think interviewers will remember about a man, are the shoes he's wearing. The shoes make an impression more than shirts, pants, or ties.

I've always wondered how true this was and wondered if it has any merit. Then I realized this morning how true it might be.

I work on a floor with about 60 other men who share the same bathroom. When I walk into the bathroom I can determine who is in the stall based on the shoes. I would estimate that I am right at least 80% of the time (No, I don't open the stall door to see if I am correct).

Maybe shoes (or feet) are more important than I thought.  If so, I wonder why people are fascinated with men's feet.

The philosopy of soccer as it relates to business

With the World Cup fast upon us, I have been thinking about soccer and how well it adapts to being a useful metaphor for other areas of life. I've particularly been looking at job functions and roles within business. Once you have a foundational understanding of basic strategies and functions for each position on the soccer field the transferable traits become obvious.

There are five distinctive roles.
1. Coach
2. Goal Keeper
3. Defenders
4. Midfielders
5. Attackers/Forwards

Using hockey would also serve you well.
