Absent Minded Giving

If you face a choice to give between a non-profit charity or an individual, one is tax deductible and one is not, does the deduction influence your decision? How so?

I wonder how often we prioritize our deductions over the needs of others without giving any thought to what we've just done.

  1. Unfortunately, the deduction has influenced my decision. Reflecting back on the times I've given, it seems that I've given my larger donations to non-profits. I'm not sure if that was done with a tax deduction motive or if I just didn't trust an individual with a large sum of money. This is something I will certainly think about in the future. Thanks Ben.

  2. That's one of the reasons I made the post Brian. It still has me thinking. It doesn't mean that it's bad, but the deduction makes it too convenient to take time and think about other incentives or motives that could have more influence on the recipients.
