I don't agree with everything Shane Claiborne says, but that's why I like him - he gives me a challenge. Claiborne says the following in his book, The Irresistible Revolution.
"So it's important to understand that redistribution comes from community, not before community. Redistribution is not a prescription for community. Redistribution is a description of what happens when people fall in love with each other across class lines."

Like in Acts when people shared with those as others had needs. Or as Paul talked about several times in the NT. The difference between that and socialism is that nobody was forced to give anything. Their hearts were right, and this was an outpouring of love instead of fulfilling a specific requirement.
ReplyDeleteHmm. If I understand correctly, Claiborne is saying that since Christians are called to love one another, then redistribution will naturally follow suit when that occurs. I disagree. I can love and share without the government forcing my hand.
