Image via WikipediaGrowing up, our congregation participated in what we called "Bible Quiz". They took place once a month on a Friday night where congregations rotated in hosting the event. There were 3 divisions; Junior, Junior High & Senior High. Everyone studied the same 3 chapters of the New Testament (excluding the Gospels & Revelation) for that month and it had to be from the King James Version. Then each team/congregation was given 5 minutes to take a written quiz consisting of about 30 questions and it was open book.
Last night, for some reason, I recalled a lot of memories from these Bible Quizzes and I realized I was still bitter about being forced to participate in these events. Often I had to give up Sunday afternoons to go "study" with the other kids. Then I had to give up Friday nights doing other things with my school friends. I realize the event was really more for the adults than anyone else. While each division was taking their tests, everyone else would spend time singing together.
Beyond being forced to do this, the older I got the more I felt it was a bad idea to make your knowledge of the Bible the basis for competition, especially with kids. Now I am wondering if I am using this argument to justify my aversion with this event as a child.
