Peter Jenkins - Walk Across America
This morning I had the opportunity to listen to Peter Jenkins, author of A Walk Across America, his most well-known book. Six of his seven books have been national best sellers. His story of walking across America back in the late 70's after graduating college is fascinating. He simply wanted to discover America for himself. So, he and his dog Cooper did exactly that. His book is very timely for today and our current events. I may set out to read it again.
Anyway, his talk this morning highlighted how fear, especially in people we don't know, holds us back from discovering great things. He used examples from A Walk Across America.
I was also able to sit down and talk with him for a few minutes. He's the kind of guy you could sit on a porch and talk with for hours.
Call me crazy
I am speaking again on Sunday. I am thinking about this text; Romans 13:1-7. Am I crazy to do this right after an election? However, when I keep reading Romans 13:8-14 it really makes me realize how we fall short on everything when we fail to love. Love actually calls us to a responsibility that exceeds any expectations of authority or laws. It should cause us to go beyond the status quo.
It's Election Day - 2008
Image by circulating via FlickrSo, today is election day. Millions of people who did not early vote like myself, will be standing in line to cast their vote in what people are referring to as a "historic election" (but aren't they all?). I suppose it will be more memorable because of the color and gender of Barrack Obama and Sarah Palin, respectively. Nonetheless, I find myself not caring who wins because I have little hope in either of the major candidates. Each passing year, I realize the President and congress, certainly are not the fixes to my problems. I don't suppose it is such a bad thing that I feel that way. It simply reminds me of the one I should place my hope in.
Since the Pittsburg Steelers beat the Washington Redskings last night, I suppose that means Obama will be our next president. I do agree with him that college football needs a playoff system.
Eh...I didn't really have much to say. I just wanted to mark this occassion on my blog. Go America.
