I dare say we follow up "I love you" by pointing out flaws because we're selfish. We're selfish because we don't want others to think we accept certain behaviors or ideals. Unless we state the preconditions of our love for others, we fear others may love us circumstantially as well.
Try saying the following list and mean it.
- "I love McCain"
- "I love Obama"
- "I love Biden"
- "I love Palin"
Wonderful post Ben.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if God has the qualifiers like we do?
ReplyDeleteI love X, but only wish they would stop sinning by doing Y.
If He does, then maybe it just points out that He does love us unconditionally, while we say we love those we hate because it's not proper to say what we really feel or believe
